Forms, Materials and Community

Semester I  | Location: Haifa, Israel

This project discusses the characteristics of a specific site, with a sense of a place. The first semester was experimental and focused on observation, communication, and reconfiguration. In the project, I translated the essence of the site into forms and materials. An important distinction was the proximity of the buildings to each other. I saw this as an advantage and chose to place common balconies between the buildings. This element could give the base to build a community, through random encounters between the tenants. On the site, I designed a community center. In addition, I identified a housing problem for the underprivileged population. Therefore I designed shared apartments for immigrants around the community center. Due to the lack of space, the new apartments were designed as an extra floor to the existing buildings. This will create opportunities for the existing and new population to meet. It was important to me to create a comprehensive solution. I desired to create a strong foundation for what we call a community.
