Milan’s Food Block

Semester VI  | Location: Milan, Italy

Team Members: Dafna Galeen, Aneta Okulska, Manuela Trompiz

This urban design studio engaged in the design of a wholesale market in Milan. The ”Ortomercato” of Milan exists today on the eastern side of the city. The market is home to 3,000 employees and 9,000 buyers every day. During the semester we researched wholesale markets around the world and the “Ortomercato” in Milan. These formed the basis of our planning process. Milan's Food Block project offers a new perspective on the existing market today. First, a new composition was changed by 90 degrees, to fit the urban grid. Second, adding a public area that will give another layer to the market. This public piazza consists of a food court that serves fresh food thanks to its close connection to the market. On the north, located the co-working building. The public area will bring in a new audience and involve the community in activities that until now were reserved for a particular sector. The "piazza" will make the neglected area where the market is located today more lively and will contribute to the feeling of security in it.
