On The Safe Side

Semester II  | Location: Haifa, Israel

This site is a neglected land in Hadar, a neighborhood of low socioeconomic status. The area is located between residential buildings and near by outdoor market. The project is a safe home for at-risk youth and a public open space for the neighborhood. At-risk youth are coming from troubled families and their first needs are to feel safe and trusted. The project consists of levels made of wood that vary in size and height and go down into the ground. Their additional activity spaces are being discovered. This space is giving physical and mental security to its users. The elements are going deeper into the ground and the user can feel safe and protected. The intersecting perspectives, the levels, the filtered light, and the grounding feeling, is allowing a relaxed and safe environment that gives the users freedom to take risks and dream confidently. Those values play great roles for at-risk youth.
